Published by Hodder and Stoughton in London, 1942. This first edition is particularly scarce in any condition. Still widely read today, first editions are sought after collectibles. The first book in the Famous Five series, which has gone on to be one of the bestselling children's series ever. Pencil drawing to rear board, with small price sticker. Crayon marks to rear blanks and ink writing in a child's hand to rep. Closed tear to lower edge of page 79 reaching bottom line of text. Loss to lower portion of half titlefrontispiece. Cracking to gutter, ffep loose, text block otherwise sound.
Author's name has been drawn around in pen to the front cover. Binding quite rubbed, significantly to the spine and edges, with spots of discolouration and scuffs. Ink inscription in a child's hand to ffep. First edition hardback bound in publisher's original pale blue cloth with blue lettering to cover and spine. The rear of the jacket has some red marks and there is minor staining to the bottom edge. The top edge of the rear flap is curled with tiny chips.
The back cover top and bottom left hand corners are rubbed with minor loss. The top and bottom of the spine has some loss not affecting the title or author. The front flap hinge is rubbed with a 6cm split in the middle. The right hand top and bottom corners have minor loss The top and bottom edges are rubbed and the top edge has a crease running along the entire edge. Dust wrapper/ The front cover has a triangle surface loss above the author. The text block is foxed and this has spread to the margins of the first few pages and to some later pages. the front end paper has a small inscription.
The rear board has some marks in white and red. The gilt lettering on the front board and spine is bold and clear. The front board right hand top and bottom edges are bumped slightly.
